FAQs

1. What does a typical Girls Who Code meeting look like?

To be frank, I can't say there is a "typical" Girls Who Code meeting because, aside from regular announcements at the onset of each session, every meeting is different. It really depends on what we are working on. In the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year, we worked on our personal websites, building an online resume that included but was not limited to an About Me page, a portfolio, and a blog. In the second semester of this year, we wanted to make a website touting all the wonderful clubs of Hoover in one place. Hoover is dramatically different from my previous 11 years of schooling. And as much as these times are different and difficult, we need to come together more. This year, we did not have an official Club Rush in which each club is assigned a promotional table during lunch. During Hoover's Club Rush, you feel the hot sun of Los Angeles baking your skin and sweat running down your face as you squeeze through the crowd of students. The energy of students at Club Rush, encouraging and befriending one another, was one of my best experiences at Hoover. This year, Club Rush was virtual via Hoover’s Instagram page. This, however, did not have much of an impact on the incoming freshman. Some of them did not have access to a phone, had been barred by their parents from social media, or simply didn’t know it was happening. This was a huge problem for our freshmen and clubs alike. The freshmen lacked the chance to learn about the joys of being a part of a club in their freshman year, which in my opinion is the most crucial time to explore new experiences so as to discover your true passions. I discussed this with my wonderful ladies in Girls Who Code and we came up with an idea to make a website! As a result, Hoover’s Girls Who Code chapter hosted an event at which students convene to learn how to code their own pages on the communal website. This was such a great opportunity for students to not only learn how to code, but also to leave our legacy here at Hoover!

2. What is the goal of GWC (Girls Who Code) ?

The goal of Girls Who Code is to close the gender gap in tech today. The gender gap in Computer Science is getting worse. Here are the stats: In 1995, only 37% of computer scientists were women. Today, it’s only 24%. Surprising right? The percent will continue to decline if we do nothing. We know that the biggest drop-off of girls in computer science occurs between the ages of 13 and 17. Girls Who Code is changing the game. We believe that diverse ability, culture, identity, and opinion make us stronger. We’re not just preparing our ladies to enter the workforce - we’re preparing them to lead it, to improve it, to radically transform it.

3. Why should people join GWC ?

I mean, it's Girls Who Code!! Is a reason really needed? Every girl and non-binary student should join Girls Who Code because they’ll join a supportive sisterhood and learn the computer science skills you need to make an impact in your community and the world! Meet inspiring female role models in the field and get an inside look at the tech world through guest speakers by the world’s top companies, like Twitter, AT&T, Bank of America, and Walmart. By being a part of Girls Who Code, you are taking a stand and making an impact on what matters to you by learning to code. In addition, you would be learning in a supportive environment and making life-long, inspiring friendships.

4. What if I have no idea how to code ? Do I need prior experience?

No! Absolutely not! Every girl and non binary student here at Hoover is invited to join girls who code. Prior experience is not necessary at all! Mrs. Rogers, our advisor and hoover's AP Computer Science Principles teacher and other students who are experienced in coding are here to help! The GWC club at hoover prides itself in learning through collaboration. I hope you consider joining GWC and being a part of a lifelong sisterhood!
